Glass paints are available as either solvent based or water
based products. Water is used to dilute water based
paints and to clean brushes making them a safer options for
children. Solvent based paints should be thinned with white
spirit which should also be used to clean up brushes and
spills. They should be used in a well ventilated room.
The glass paints offered on this web site include Deka Cristal water based paint and Deka Transparent solvent based
paint. The paints can be used for a variety of surfaces
including wood, ceramics, plaster, metal, stone and card.
The colours are transparent but become more opaque when
layered.
Before painting on glass it is necessary to ensure that the
surface is dust and grease free. Clean the glass with
soapy water or white spirit and dry with a lint free cloth.
Either wear plastic gloves or try to handle the glass as
little as possible.
The
paint has a relatively high viscosity and can be applied free
hand with a medium sized paint brush. Areas in a design
can be defined by an outliner. This is applied to the
glass before painting and creates a raised border, giving the
traditional effect of a stained glass window.
Cocktail sticks, kitchen paper and cotton buds are ideal
tools for fixing mistakes. Dip in water for water based
paints or white spirit for solvent based paints.
The
Glass Painting Explorer pack is a good way to get
started and includes a selection of glass shapes, 3 jars of Deka Cristal and a brush.
